This cemetery, nestled between fairways of the Gorge Vale Golf Course, was consecrated in 1868 by Right Reverend George Hills, the first Anglican Bishop of British Columbia. The sailors knew this piece of land, which was once a turnip field, as "God's Acre" but officially, it was the Royal Naval Cemetery until 1947 when the Department of Veterans Affairs took over its operation and it became Veterans Cemetery.
