Member recognition:
The following report was made by Pat Rosson recognizing VGS members:
Tonight we continue to recognize members who have or are serving this Society and who are still members. We really appreciate their efforts and hope their example will encourage others to volunteer their services. Those members whose number lies between 400 and 599 will be recognized and are invited to enjoy this evening’s refreshment.
#418 – John Clazie is one of our longest serving Library Volunteers.
#491 – Gerry Poulton has previously been the Society’s Secretary and is now a Library Volunteer and is also serving on the Celebration Committee.
#499 – Keith Holden has been our Vice-President at least twice and has been Library Volunteer for many years.
#528 – Robert Irvine collects the Island Farm bar codes which so far this year has raised $124.50.
#590 – Margaret and Harvey Buckmaster who together have served as SIG Coordinator. Harvey also spent many hours documenting and photographing the Veterans’ Cemetery.
#591 – Peter Vaines has served as our Treasurer and is now a Library Volunteer. Peter is also a member of the Celebration Committee.
Tonight we are also going to recognize member #129 Dorothy Sweet. Dorothy has been a good friend to genealogy and to this Society in particular. She joined the Society soon after she took up residence in Canada and has been shuttling back and forth between here and Cornwall for many years. She is very knowledgeable on English resources and has mentored the South West England SIG for a long time. We would like to thank Dorothy for the many resources she has placed in our Library and wish her well on her return to England.
Special Presentation:
Wendy Leyland presented Dorothy Sweet with a special memories album thanking her for her involvement with the VGS. Dorothy responded with a few words of thanks. In Dorothy’s honour a cake was served at the refreshment break.
Guest Speaker
The guest speaker was Roger Stonebanks, author of “Fighting for Dignity: The Ginger Goodwin Story”. Roger’s presentation dealt with his experiences researching this book and his discovery that many mistakes had been made and simply repeated by previous writers who failed to check with original sources.
Roger and his wife Helen both, thank the members in attendance at the April General Meeting for their hospitality.
If anyone wants more information about Albert (Ginger) Goodwin and his life and death, they should just e-mail Roger @ - rstonebanks@telus.net - The book can be purchased for $20 by contacting Roger.
Further information is available at two Cumberland websites: Cumberland Museum and The Cumberlander (click on the Goodwin section).
